Dual Language in Middle and High School

There are a wide variety of approaches to dual language in secondary schools. Some districts continue the 50/50 model through the secondary grades, with students in the dual language program taking all of their classes together. Other districts mix students from the dual language program with students from other programs for their instruction in English, and consider the classes offered in Spanish to constitute the dual language program.

Because of the very small number of dual language programs that continue to the secondary level, it is difficult to set parameters for what qualifies as a dual language secondary program. As these programs increase in number, it will become possible to set guidelines at the national level.
